Remember these 3 things when contacting your legislator:
1. Tell them your name and address so they know you are their constituent.
2. State the bill number and name.
3. Give them brief facts about the bill.

Tips for lobbying:
*Stay positive - You are working on a relationship and like any other, it's about negotiating. Most likely legislators will not agree with 100% of the bill.  You never know what life experiences contribute to their concerns. Take note of their concerns about the bill and report them to PAW,
info@pawty.org or Kim Alboum, HSUS State Director, kalboum@humanesociety.org.

*Be Proactive - When you meet with legislators take fact sheets and an agenda of animal events with you.  This will allow you to present an educated case while showing legislators all the hard work you are doing in their district.

*Follow Up - After your meeting keep legislators informed about bill movement thru the legislature.  Call their assistant and give them a brief update when you receive an update.

*THANK YOU
- Always thank legislators and their assistants for their time.
Send a thank you card after meeting with your legislator.

North Carolina Legislation We're PAWTYing For:

HB 1253/SB 739 - Wildlife Penning

- In NC, foxes and coyotes are sold in a black market  trade to be released in fenced in enclosures.
- In these enclosures, wildlife is used as live bait for packs of dogs in competition.
- Animals are trapped in the wild using leg-hold traps and snares, packed into a truck with other injured animals, and shipped hundreds of miles in cramped cages with no access to food or water.
- Animals are released untreated into the pens and forced to run for their lives as hundreds of dogs are released to chase and rip them to shreds.
- Studies have shown that transporting live, wild animals leads to the spread of rabies and other diseases dangerous to other NC wildlife, pets, and humans.

Here are some scripts to help you when contacting your legislators.pdf
1. Scheduling an Appointment in Raleigh
2. Scheduling an Appointment in Your District
3. Calling for Their Vote During Session

Support your legislators:
Another way to help animals is DONATE and VOTE for animal friendly candidates. Every dollar counts in an election.  The opposition is turning up the heat by aggressively campaigning AGAINST animal friendly candidates. Animal welfare is a moral, ethical issue.  However, morals and ethics do not win campaigns. Money wins campaigns. As petty as it may seem, it's the cold, hard truth. The opposition is campaigning against legislators we love by donating to the opponent's campaign. HSUS has over 240,000 members in NC. If we each donate a minimum of $1, we will raise over $240,000.00 going towards a VOICE  for animals. PAW thinks animals deserve it, don't you?

Who do you donate your minimum donation of $1 to? If you live outside of Mecklenburg, it will take some research on your part. Call your legislators and commit to a donation while asking for their vote. In Mecklenburg, PAW supports: (If you see an animal friendly candidate not listed, please contact info@pawty.org and we will notify our distro list)
